Boris, bolly and Bonhams

Bonhams showroom opening, London – October 2013

L3 was commissioned to create the interior environment for the launch of the new Bonhams headquarters in prestigious New Bond Street, London. The auction house’s showroom was opened to great aplomb by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

We designed, created and implemented the interior for the high-profile launch. Our events work included bespoke displays and plinths to present a variety of high value artefacts, including a £15 million Portrait of François-Henri d’Harcourt by Fragonard, jewellery, watches, fine china and an Anatsui sculpture.

We also created the podium for the grand opening, where Boris told the room:
“Why do buyers come here? It’s not just the time zone, the language, the bicycles and other civilizing things. They come because they will be dealing here in London with straight talkers and straight dealers (..) because of the brilliance and the expertise and the sheer polka-dotted, crackling-knuckled good manners of the Bonhams auctioneers. Well done Bonhams (..) for bringing jobs and growth and investment to our city – and renown to London as the leading cultural, artistic and auctioneering capital of the world.”

L3 created and implemented an internally illuminated 8-metre oval cocktail bar, where guests sipped champagne and sampled liquid nitrogen ice cream. The event provided yet another outing for the versatile Steering Wheel Club portable VIP area, which L3 created previously for Robert Brooks.

Designed by architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, the multi-million pound building is now the largest auction rooms and gallery space in London, and has been hailed as a beacon for business.
